berry picking

Steve and I went berry picking today! He hesitated to go, but agreed after my pleading that I hadn't had a good strawberry yet this season and this is the last weekend of picking. We've bought them in the grocery store a few times, but they just haven't been those small, juicy ones that are so good.

We picked 10 pounds of strawberries and 2.25 pounds of blueberries. Neither of us had ever picked blueberries before, but it is fun! It is the very beginning of the season here, and many still needed to ripen, but we found a couple of good bushes. Blueberry picking is great because it's not as back-breaking as strawberry picking is, and if you get hot, you can sit underneath the bushes in the shade and pick from below, which helps you find more berries anyway!

We froze about 2/3 of each of them, and have the rest for snacking on the next few days. Yum!

When we got our blueberries this weekend at the market, several of the farms had signs about picking your own berries, and we decided it would be a really fun thing to do with Kent next year (when he's actually walking!). Our strawberry season is already over, but blueberry season is up and running. Mmmm. Enjoy your snacking-- do you ever bake muffins?
