We saw lava!!!
The highlight of our Hawaii trip so far has been seeing lava live, up close, in person! Saturday night, we hiked a little more than an hour over hardened lava to view the eruption of Kileaua volcano at Volcanoes National Park. The hike back was a little harder because it was pitch dark (we had 2 flashlights) and the rock was slippery because it had rained intermittently. This was definitely the most dangerous but most amazing thing either Steve or I have ever done / seen!
More detail later, but for now here are a few photo highlights. We also got some great short video clips from the digital camera!
Above: hardened lava into rock that we walked on to get to the viewing site - I like this because you can see it "frozen" all swirly and lava-like
Above: lava flowing into the ocean. We were thankful that the wind was blowing the other way, because volcano fumes contain hydrochloric acid and tiny crystals that can damage your lungs & eyes!
Above: getting darker...a cool explosion of lava into the ocean

Awesome pics, and what a cool thing to go do! I'm interested to see the video... you should upload it to Google video or something if you get a chance. =)
great pictures. I would love to see that!!!! Glad you got the chance and that neither of you broke any bones getting back in the dark
